Guide to Choosing Index ETFs and Brokers in Israel

Index investing success relies on three golden rules: choosing broad market indices (e.g. S&P 500 or MSCI World), minimizing the fund expense ratio (TER), and eliminating bank custody fees. Using the official TASE security number guarantees you purchase the exact fund intended without costly errors.

1. Why Search by TASE Security Number?

Hundreds of funds trade on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange with similar Hebrew names. Every single fund carries an official 7-digit TASE security number (such as 1159251 or 1150243). Typing the security number directly into your broker's search box eliminates ambiguity.

2. Dual-Listed Irish UCITS ETFs vs Israeli Funds

Major Irish UCITS ETFs (like iShares CSPX 1159251 and IWDA 1159095) trade directly on TASE in ILS. They offer a dual tax advantage: 15% US dividend withholding instead of 30%, an accumulating structure that automatically reinvests dividends without annual taxation, and complete exemption from US estate taxes.

3. The Bank Custody Fee Trap

Commercial Israeli banks routinely levy an annual custody fee of 0.15% to 0.20% on your total portfolio balance, regardless of performance. Independent brokers and Interactive Brokers (IBKR) charge 0% custody fee. Specifically, via the Psagot Trade partner offer, you receive a ₪200 cash bonus, lifetime ₪0 account fees, 0.06% TASE trades (min ₪2), and 0% money market fees. Over a 10 to 25-year horizon, avoiding bank custody fees saves tens of thousands of shekels in compound drag.

4. Past Performance in Perspective

While past performance does not guarantee future results, it demonstrates tracking efficiency, liquidity, and tax drag relative to the benchmark. Testing across multiple horizons (1Y, 3Y, 5Y, 10Y) helps you visualize how fees compound across diverse market regimes.
